What is a data broker?

A company that buys your personal information — where you go, what you buy, what you search for — packages it into a profile, and sells it to advertisers, insurers, employers, or anyone paying. You were never their customer. Four states force them to register: California, Oregon, Vermont, and Texas. That's where this list comes from — and why it's only ~750. It's just the companies that actually filed paperwork: only four states require it, the laws are new, and plenty of brokers quietly skip it. The real number is far bigger — likely thousands in the US alone.
